I really can’t believe it will be soon be time to go back to college. The summer has flown by in a haze of deadlines and conflicting commitments – is this how freelance life feels – never trusting that it’s ok to take a day off?
As the end of the holidays looms, the need to get stuff to completion is growing. Well that, and the fact that the conference I’ve been preparing for actually happens next week. I’m editing a book which also needs to be complete next week, and then there’s the small matter of my college summer project, which remains undone…
So what have I done with the past 3 months? I guess it all took off when I volunteered to help Fabrica Gallery at the Brighton Festival back in May. And then I forgot how to say no! I’ve had a lot of fun and done lots of work: volunteer gallery assistant, milking 180 dairy cows, market research call centre bod, deli assistant (cook, waitress, washer-up) conference production, book editing and publishing, website building, tomato growing, festival going, book reading, turning 40. Oh, and Mevolution underneath all of that.
So I can see why it feels a little hectic. Leo Babauta’s suggestion that we only work with 3 projects at a time is all very well, but I can’t see how to have that few. Maybe it’s ok to group my life into college, Mevolution, freelance. That gives me 3 departments to put it all in, and maybe it will start to make sense soon?
